I found a little program called DskSpeed.

It does some reading and tests the speed of a HD.
I was amazed at how slow some of the old IDE drives I had were.
Interestingly, some of my USB 2.0 with IDE drives were almost twice as fast, the SATAs in my main desktop and DB server screamed by comparison.
