Jumped in and bought what will be a "running" parts car (1988 420SEL) with the following attributes:
1). just passed Oregon DEQ so the engine management/exhaust system must be working correctly
2). the spare OEM alloy wheel/Michelin tire in the trunk looks to have never been on the ground
3). has the grey interior of the '91 & it is all there (seats would need new covers but this is a parts car and I don't anticipate driving it unless it would be to a body shop that was repairing the '88 or '91 GOD FORBID!)
4). Alpine 10 Disc CD changer with a separate head unit and remote control
5). new (in 2009) alternator, battery, brakes & (in 2010) belts, hoses, distributor cap & rotor, plug wires and 2 tires
6). the four re-chromed alloys have the two basically new tires and their chrome is actually in better condition than that on my current '88
7). body is super-straight, no indication of any rust that I can find, dark blue paint is faded or the clearcoat is going...
8). power windows and sunroof all work, windshield is CRACKED but all other glass, lenses, trim, bumpers, etc. are in really good condition
9). two complete front hood ornament assy's and a half dozen MB emblems, chrome center caps, etc. This was a two-owner (1 family) car that spent some time in California where I assume these things are routinely stolen...
I've already cancelled my collision insurance on both the '88 & '91 and am seriously considering getting rid of the uninsured motorist PD coverage since they won't give me a valuation vis-a-vis what their "total lo$$" threshold w/b for my cars.
$800
CHEERS!
