My '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603) started making a ticking noise while on a rainy-day trip. Turned out one of the four bolts securing the wiper assembly had started to back out and was being struck by the linkage every time the arm rotated. Tightening the bolt fixed the problem.

Yes, if the windshield is completely wet, it will work fine. If an extremely light sprinkle, where the window is dry in many places, it won't go. Might go half way, then stop.
If the windshield is dry, it might not go at all.
When it does go, there's no clicking noise. Quiet as can be.
