The FIRST thing this brought to my mind was the Civil rights struggle of the 1950's and 1960's in the US South.

There is a RIch Lode of pictures in the not too recent history of the US south - ARKANSAS, MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA, especially.

Vivid images
from the newspapers and magazines still stand out in my mind now:

Polling places in heavily black rural counties with 55 gallon drums outside, with hissing rattlesnakes set on top of them which was QUITE a challenge to pass, and sending a message on mopre than one level to would be black voters.

A picture of a brand new '65 Dodge Dart coupe parkd near a civil rights deonstration, with a huge letters painted all down the side: "'MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPI HATES NIGERS" (sic)

Burning churches set on fire in black rural counties;

Sheriff Bull Conner unleashing police dogs on black children marching for civil rights, and the adult marchers being hosed down with fire hoses by local law enforcement, the Army and National Guard being called in finally, the Ku Klux Klan, gett9n in on the action, the murder of Cheney Goodwin and Schwerner, the white civil rights workers, from up North, etc etc

Ask ANY 60+ year old african american adult today, almost anyone, that lived down there at the time, and they will remember. Vividly. A shameful and disgraceful part of our history, the racism and hate that most white americans would prefer to forget.

I am presided that so few, and nobody so far, on here, has called the "tea party" movement and these Republicans, the authors of the lastest chapter in this horrid story, just more RACISM, hatred and fear.

For shame.
