sure, pro detailers use wax, it makes a difference. But the idea of 'protection' , I think, is misleading.
Think about the physics of wax for a sec. Water sticks to the paint because it is a rough surface compared to something like glass. You fill all the little valleys in with the wax then smooth the top out by heating the wax with each removing stroke.
Certainly, less water and dirt can stick to this surface and maybe some acidic bird poop won't etch its mark in there.
But what about the sun? By waxing, you actually trap light waves in between the wax and the paint surface creating more harm than if the car had no wax on it. The light waves continue to bounce around until they find their way out.
Light waves can cause cancer in animals. But most of them ingest the elements you think you are protecting your paint from on a daily basis.
