I would say that cost per mile is more to do with MPG then quality.
You really can't expect a 450SL to have the same running cost as a 240D in the same way that we don't expect a 240D to provide you with open top motoring at 80mph.

If cost per mile was the only factor, then we'd all be in new Honda Civic's.
