IMHO here's the story as regards the S-class: If you can't afford to buy a new one you can't afford to own one ever.
The S-class is Mercedes "leading edge" car and as such requires LOTS of TLC from dealers. Make that expensive TLC.
The E-class, however, is the taxicab of Germany and a lot more practical bet.
Most S-class owners who are past warranty are probably just treating their cars as "run-til-it fails," (i.e. like a Camry) and if an S-class has been in that state for long you don't want it.
