I just installed a new door check strap on my '88 300CE, but didn't lubricate it. Also, there was a plastic shroud which I left off, as the original broken strap didn't have one.

The part cost $31.50 from the dealer, so I'll probably leave well enough alone and replace it years from now if it wears out before I do. Anyone know the purpose of the plastic shroud? Should I re-do this project for that and lubrication?
