Why Different Amounts of Air in Primary Fuel Filters?

I suppose the only downside to owning two (almost) identical cars is that I notice every difference, so I start wondering...

In one car (91 300D), the amount of air in the primary fuel filter is negligible....maybe a half inch if the filter were turned vertically.

In the other car (92 300D), I would say the amount of air is about 1/3 the volume of the filter.

Both cars fun flawlessly.

Why the difference in the size of the air pockets?

I guess this is how I amuse myself when both cars are working perfectly!
