As SB has pointed out , there are other diagnostic modules on your car that can be accessed at the different sockets with the aid of a simple led/sw tool. This is OBD1 system and quite good.

The built-in one only accesses the emmisions system one , but
that is the one that trips the CE light...

A home-made tool is nice to have , as your car is the last flash
code system before OBDII, which requires a scanner..
