I've noticed no change in sound with and without the panels, inside or outside my '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603). Interesting, since the factory calls them "sound-deadening panels" or words to that effect. They should help the coefficient of drag and they do catch oil drips and dropped tools. Yes, they are very expensive new and hard to find used. My 124 came with both of its panels but the 210 was missing the first (of three) and it was $166 to replace it.
