Army and your suggestions are both excellent, but the situation called for instantaneous resolution.

I quite literally was sitting in the car with it all packed up ready to leave, put it in gear, and 8 inches later, my trip was halted.

I took ten, taped them off, nipped off the ends with a cut off wheel, then ground a bevel on the edge, then cleaned up the threads a little with a small file. After that, they all threaded in just like stock, took about 15 minutes all said and done and I was able to get on the road.
