I've got Centurytel/CenturyLink as my ISP. My original "deal" was Dialup...they came through the neighborhood about 2 years ago and told everyone they were "upgrading" the services that they had available.

I couldn't have cared less.

They kept pestering...sending mailer after mailer touting the improvement in speed, service, blah, blah, blah.

I wouldn't budge.

Then, one crappy, cold, rainy morning (about 0300), I come home from some God-forsaken, sucky, repair job up north, and stuck between my front door and the storm door was this box, about 6" x 6" x 6".

"WTF!?!?!?"

I crack open the front door, kick the box into the house and wonder "What the hell didn't I order? It's mine for the keeping if I have no idea who/what ordered it."

It had a return tag saying nothing more than WESTEL on it. I opened it up and sure enough, it was a modem. Again, that I didn't order. I eventually managed to find out that Centurytel/Link went ahead and upgraded my "Dialup" to "DSL" - due to the fact that they needed everyone on the "node" at a certain level for their equipment to run their NexGen level of gear..."Dialup" wasn't cutting it for them. And SINCE I didn't order the DSL, they have to give it to me for the old "Dialup" price.

AS LONG AS I DON'T CHANGE MY SERVICE ORDER OR UPGRADE, I'm "grandfathered" in at that "Dialup" price. They don't offer "Dialup" anymore and if there's no "Dialup" offered, they can't raise a price on something they don't have or offer.

I still get 3-4 mailings each week touting the wonders of fast, speedy, error-free connections that could skin a cat faster than you can spit, but I'll remain the cheap, old-fart ba5tard that I am and let you folks know when I get "upgraded" again with the NexGen level of excitement when DSL won't cut it anymore for those folks.

All for $19.95/month.
