Okay I'll put a wastegate swap on the back burner. The car runs too darn well to tear into it when my 603 is also apart. This car is slow but reliable, my 603 is much faster but runs for shorter periods of time. I'll hold off on the wastegate swap.

Does the 603 rev higher than the 602? I think I've seen over 5k in my 603 before.

Thanks for the replies guys!
They are supposed to shift at the same point and have the same limit, but over the years, this may change some.

When in the army, I drove some kind of tracked wehicle with the army spec OM603 turbo. The heads were hevily modified to withstand the high load, but this vehicles revved 6500 RPMS easy (yes, six thousand five houndred).
You can modify the injection pump for higher revs, but needless to say, at you own risk :-)

In euro spec, the models are a little easier to understand.

200D = 4-door, 2-liter diesel 72 bhp
200TD = 5-door, 2-liter diesel 72 bhp
250D = 4-door, 2,5-liter diesel 90/95 bhp
250TD = 5-door, 2,5-liter diesel 90/95 bhp
250D Turbo (DT) = 4-door, 2,5-liter diesel turbo 126 bhp
250TD Turbo (TDT)= 5-door, 2,5-liter diesel turbo 126 bhp (sold in Italy only)
300D = 4-door, 3-liter diesel 109-113 bhp
300TD = 5-door, 3-liter diesel 109-113 bhp
300D Turbo (DT) = 4-door, 3-liter diesel turbo 147 bhp
300TD Turbo (TDT)= 5-door, 3-liter diesel turbo 147 bhp

The same goes for the petrol engines, where a 200E is 2,0-litre, 230E is 2,3, 320E is the 3,2-litre and so on.

All this changed slightly with the 1994 models, where the name e-class was introduced, and the model names all started with an E. Still, the 2,0 would be E200 etc.

Regarding the shift point, have a look in the speedo, you'll find 1 dot where first gear end, 2 dots where 2nd gear end and 3 dots where 3rd gear end. 4700 rpms sound spot on.
