And not just any VPN. It needs to have a strong public-private key arrangement to prevent the man-in-the-middle. SSL isn't going to cut it, that's for sure.

I think I can trust the telcos pretty well. Probably anyone with an open connection isn't going to have the knowledge of how to perform a man-in-the-middle attack, but there's always the notion of a honey pot.
