Your 96 E300D has a bolt at the front of the block for the purpose of getting the air out of the cooling system. It has a very flat head, take it out, fill the block and coolant tank until it runs out of the hole where the bolt came out of. Replace the bolt, and then warm up the engine and re adjust coolant level in expansion tank if needed.
