Yes.... They are two completely different components and can be separated.
Funny thing (actually not so funny). I had one of those damn support rods and threw it away when I was cleaning out my shed the other day (along with a Kaput cruise actuator). You should be able to find the support rods on here or in a salvage yard for very little $$. Maybe free... There are some pretty cool and helpful people around this forum.
I'd send them to you if I had them.
