I do not know a great deal about the catholic church or the pope but everything I have read seems to indicate that the church as with most religions seems to deal in absolutes. Murder is bad... period. Adultery is bad... period. Premarital sex is bad ... period.
I do not ever recall the pope saying something is bad, BUT is this case it is better than the alternative. As far as I can remember, condoms have always been a no-no in the catholic church. Now they are OK for prostitutes to prevent the spread of HIV? That seems like it would be a huge slippery slope for the pope to get on. Seems like he is saying that hey, I do not agree with prostitution or condoms but if you are going to sell your self for sex at least cover up before you go play.
I agree with the end result but I do not see how he can get away with saying that and holding absolute on so many other issues.
