Yes the bad axle is a reasonable cause of the noise.

The shock procedure is the same for the W123 & W126.
Steps needed are:
#1. - #6.
#18. - 19.
Reverse this procedure to install..

Replacing the Rear Shocks & Springs on the W126 1985 300SD
