'72 SE 4.5: Do I need a new transmission?
Ok. I'm an enthusiast, not a mechanic. My mechanic who love$ me says I have some leaks on my transmission seals and that my transmission pump is leaking as well. He suggests a new transmission as fixing all of the above costs over 700.00 in labor and it ultimately doesn't fix the transmission. He suggests a rebuilt tranny for about $2500.00.
Please let me know what you guys think. Help.
Tranny Observations and Stats:
Just over 100,000 miles.
I've had a few minor transmission slips at high speed, no longer than 1/2 a second.
When I shift, I have to wait a second or two for the gears to engage.
I have small transmission fluid drips.
There are times, mostly in cold weather when first rolling out for the day, when the engine (or maybe the tranny) stutters horribly and I can't get ove 30mph. Sometimes, shutting the engine off and starting again makes it stop.
