Yep, the shield was still there. I wasn't sure at first but I stuck a toothpick in and marked the depth of #2 hole against #3 and 3 was more shallow by the depth of the shield. So I did as advised and tapped the circumference with a punch and now there is joy in hole#3!!

Not too much carbon...a lot of it came out on a shop rag on my finger. I'll take my cylinder brush and clean them out real good then suck it all out with my shop vac.
