Grand Cherokees are different from regular Cherokees.

I drive a '99 Cherokee for work. I drive about 60 miles a day on interstate hwys, mostly, and average about 17 mpg. IF the Jeep has received regular maintenance, they are bullet-proof. If not, you just don't know. They have been out for enough years so that parts are available. I've found it easy to work on. There is enough room to carry everything I need for work.
My only complaint is that the seating is a little snug. I'm 6 ft tall, and I fit, but I could use a little more room.
