The deal is that POSSESSION of those documents is prosecutable under the 1917 Espionage Act. The only way he could have gotten clear of that would have been to return the documents and never breathe a word about them to anybody.
It is funny, these documents put 1000's of people at risk, ruined a lot of covert operations, blew the cover on a lot of people, can cause North Korea to blow up, etc but that is heroic... Meanwhile the whole Valerie Plame thing was treason...

Assange needs to be extradited to the US to face espionage charges and his sources should face charges of treason.
Meanwhile, it looks like his website has been pulled down...
