Are you taking the position that these are tolerant societies? I'm certainly not. But what the man did would be illegal anywhere, the penalties are going to be appropriate to the culture. If US Christian-Right kooks ran the place, he'd get five years here too. I was just speaking with someone from that country, he says the reason the penalty is severe is because these types of acts can cause religious riots, and in a country like Indonesia where people are packed in like sardines, that can mean hundreds of deaths. I think they should have given him the whole five years. Heck, just read the news article:

I am sure that if this mob went on to kill a few hundred Christians, that would not be his fault, according to you, because his religion is of the correct flavor. In my view, this is a just law for their society and the guy got what he deserved, in fact, I think he got off easy. Tell me, what is the penalty for shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater?
