I remember a relative shopping for a Type 181 around 1973. $2,800 MSRP? IIRC, the sales brochure boasted a top speed of about 70 MPH. I believe that a lower final drive ratio relative to the Beetle was the major culprit, but the aerodynamics of a barn door surely didn't help. I think they came in three colors for the U.S. market: white, orange and yellow.
