Rational or not, assuming we agree to secure the border, my question would be how? The border is roughly 1,400 miles I think? How many people would it take to secure it? How much infrastructure? If we want to go fancy are we going to use electronic measures? How much do we want to spend on this and are we willing to raise taxes in order to pay for it. I have yet to hear how it will be done and paid for by the folks who want it.
Aside from that, the only people who this wall will stop are the immigrant workers. If a terrorist wants in we still have thousands of miles of unsecured coastal access plus the northern border with Canada. If a terrorist wants in, they will get in with out much difficulty.
When you look at the cost of securing the southern border and deduct that from the cost of the immigrants what are we lest with? I don't know.
