Locomotive engines run at 900-1000 RPM. That particular engine uses a master and articulating connecting rod assembly. It was probably dead reliable at 2500 HP, but increases in power find the weakness of the design- sort of like the 350 "rod bender"

Imagine the odds of that happening. You'ld have a better chance of winning the lottery and getting struck by lightning in the same day.
