Twenty five years ago my then new bride and I went on a cross country trip, and at one point we were in Texas to visit a favorite uncle I hadn't seen in a while. He took us out in in his big 'ol Cadillac to see the sights of Plano(!). At some point I decided I needed to write down some nugget of information that he said, and I reached to open the glove box to look for a pen or pencil. He put his hand on my arm to stop me, saying, "Son, don't open that unless you mean bidness. It's a state law here that every car has to carry a handgun in the glovebox. It's how we settle disputes at four-way stops."

Another amazing thing I remember from that trip... we were on blue highways, not interstates. At some point out in the middle of the sagebrush nowhere we pulled up at a little store that had one of those arrow trailer signs advertising "Kickapoo joy juice - HERE!" flashing. Well, with a sign like that we had to go in. The wife wanted to pick up some wine, since we had had the experience of being in dry counties this looked like an opportunity. The proprietor kind of squinted at us when we mentioned that we'd like to buy some wine, and he led us to a nearly bare shelf at the back of the store where he had four dusty packages of boxed wine, unknown vintage. We looked doubtful, so he knocked a couple dollars off the price just to get rid of one. I later asked my uncle about that place, and he said "Oh, yeah, I know that place. It's between two dry counties. Very practical arrangement - neither county claims it, so they get to sell liquor. They do good bidness." I think it was called the Sugar Shack or something like that.
