In 1983, my father brought home what was then a new leaf for BMW. It was a charcoal grey BMW 533i, one the first ones to come to the states. See, BMW had long been smogged and bogged with emissions, CAFE and the like. Their futile attempts produced the 2.8 Eta motor, known as the "E." The "I" was to be their new car, getting back to performance... Only two options came on the car, metallic paint and Auto transmission, our car had both. It was perhaps one of the fastest car this family has ever owned. With only 188 hp, this car had something going for it! But with one caveat, you could spit in front of the thing and it was bound to spin. Those Michelin TRX tires were horrible, eventhough they were the best (claimed) performance tires of their day... Though the car had horrible idel problems that would lead to an entire short block replacement, along with the terrible domestic manners, it was a great car. Few 5-series car have matched it since.
