You hit the nail on the head with the inner city comment. I have lived in Europe as a young man, and am here to says this based on my experiences:

The rail system in most European countries is wonderful, However when you take in the population density and the actual land area versus what we have here in the US (and Canada for that matter) the rail idea just wont work. Too much area not enough people.

And it also helps that the US and Nato rebuilt most of the rail over there after WW2. Just sayin.........
