Can't speak for Reno and Folsom but if you would murder a federal official while he/she was in preformance of his/her duties, you would be tried in federal court and sent to a facility which would probably be a maximum security lockup and, as a former employee of the federal courts, I can tell you that they are places where you do not want to go.
The federal court has sentencing guidelines and no parole, just a tiny bit of good behavior time. It is curious that federal courts give sentences in months. We once had a guy get 370 months for a series of bank robberies. He looked at his lawyer and said "How much is that in years?"
The lawyer replied "You really don't want to know!"
