If you can't hear the fuel pump running, and you know it works, but it's not coming on, then you need to look into the FP relay. Good news is that it should be easy to locate and R&R. Often it just needs to be resoldered or have the contacts cleaned.

P.S. Sorry I don't know where the relay is on this car though I'd imagine it's on the firewall like most other Mercs.
