I think you're probably using a comparatively cheap spring compressor - these tend to be wider at the top (the end that you attach a socket onto) and they can get stuck in the hole in the chassis...

Most people tend to file away a little bit of metal on this hole to make a clearance fit for the compressor.

Get a rubber hammer and very GENTLY tap the top of the compressor so that it falls below. CATCH THE SPRING! Don't let it drop - I don't want to read that the compressor failed and that you've now got a W123 front spring wedged in your nuts...
