OK. Here is proof positive of my laziness. I got back into my dash today, a mere 8.5 months after raising the question.
JayK was right. There was a hole facing the front of the car that this fit into. I am fairly certain that this is a temperature probe of some sort. After I knocked it loose while installing the radio, the AC auto-temp got pretty squirrely. After I put it back yesterday, that seemed to improve.
Of course, I found another stray wire. It is like an octopus convention back behind the radio! As I recall, the wire is brown with blue stripe. It has a plastic block over a female connector, with some sort of weird aluminum bracket attached (can't find my cable to download from the phone). With a mirror, I was unable to find a stray male spaded connector. The radio and climate control all work, so I will let this mystery percolate.
The reason I was in the car was to finally install my Christmas present: a new side mirror switch. Woo hoo!
Some day, I will get back to the year-old mystery dash rattle.
And the stationary driver's window.
And the stationary radio mast.
And the mystery coolant leak.
And the glow plugs (they go at the bottom of the list for now, since the weather has warmed up)
Regards,
Tom
