Once you replace the broken part, make sure that the cable is not too tight and your shifting should return to normal. The transmission does obviously gauge where the gas pedal is in relation to when/how it shifts. The gas pedal on a well sorted car is actually pretty sensitive to pressure so the cable cannot be binding anywhere.
