Does the software allow her to share files with anyone? I thought that iTunes gives a user the right to share a certain small number of copies with other people. If so, maybe she could open a new account, share the irreplaceable files with herself, and then start clean on her music library.

Major caveat here, just in case this wasn't already obvious, I don't know ***** about iTunes. So don't go by me.
