Hey Don,
If the situation at home is having a negative influence on your studies then it is time to make changes to your living arrangements.
I think your mom will understand if you explain that you need to reduce the stress in your life as its not good for your studies.
Saying "I am moving out" will only upset & inflame things. Saying you need to spend some time away from home to help you with your studies may be a more gentle approach.
I had friends that moved from home into on campus accommodation when I was at uni for the same reasons as you are advancing.

To offer to help with fixing the car is a noble thing to do. Stressing about the consequences of car problems is you taking on problems that are not yours.

At the end of the day, realize that all of us on here wish you well in these difficult times !!!
