My TD is a Euro non-turbo. I had just enough room next to the balancer, to get a short 3/8 extension and 17 mm socket on the front bracket bolt.

I discovered the bottom alternator-bolt had snapped at the threads shortly after I acquired my first 240D. The alternator must have been rattling and knockng about for who-knows how long!
I was able to get all the bolt fragments out, and make a shim from some scrap steel to fill the oversize hole in the bottom of my alternator. Also had to use selected washers to shim between the alternator and bracket as gaps had opened there as well.

Happy Motoring, Mark
