Do you happen to know if you are using the standard gmail service or the basic html?

Scroll down to the bottom of the page when you are looking in your inbox and you'll see the following:-

May be the snazzy "standard" version is having trouble with your browser...

...do you open gmail in a window that is fitted to your full screen or do you use a reduced size window to run firefox?

{Explanation:- I think your browser gives certain bits of information to the gmail server so that your page size (among other things) gets 'tuned' to the desired size}
