I don't know what to do. I can't just walk away from it and have the car sit there while my step dad doesn't know how he's going to get to and from work.
I want to move out and was going to tell them... Monday I found a friend that had a good rate for me at his place.. but then this crap happened. I can't walk away from this. I haven't been able to think clearly, I bombed my physics test yesterday because I missed out on study time and I couldn't think clearly.
I do not like this at all.

Do what you can. Set limits and a deadline based on your school and work schedule, study time and exams; e.g "I can't work past X PM. Can you remind me so I'm not late..." Then set your watch or phone alarm, or ask a friend to call you to guarantee you follow your limits.
Reconsider you mom's frame. What if she meant "I think you're a competent mechanic, but what if the car's too far gone? Will that be a waste of time and money and still leave us stuck?"
Reconsider the cost of the valve cover gasket versus the cost of a leaky repair; particularly if you think there are concerns about your skill as a mechanic. What's a gasket cost?
