Here, you've put your finger on a fundamental difference between Obama's approach and the GOP approach. The GOP assumes that the United States has been defeated. To them, there is no way the United States can afford to fix its roads or take care of old people. Maybe the GOP is right, but I doubt it.

At least for the past 30 years or so, the Democrats have been the party of fiscal discipline and success. You can moralize all you want, but the GOP has a terrible track record on this issue.
