Back in the day a Novell CNE or CNA was the fast track to an IT job. I know a few people who went from $6.35/hr to $40k/yr in like six weeks.

Sometime in the mid 90's you could start at $60k/year with a four year Computer Science degree. Then everyone got laid off when the tech bubble burst.
