before removing the head id sure spray a few(case?) cans of carb cleaner in there maybe try pressurizing with air or water. while the motor is running.

i use super caustic floor cleaner degreaser to soften the sludge/carbon buildup in the intake manifolds of the tdis let it soak for a while
