My case was curious. The maple seeds and holly flowers mainly caught in the strip behind the rubber piece that makes the gutter under the rear part of the hood/firewall. Water flows along this gutter and into the hinge pocket to drain. Organic material that collects gets flushed into the pocket to rot.
More from that channel, less from the windshield area pointed to in my situation.
