for the bulk of things yes, but if you want to target a specific muscle within a group, sometimes standing on your head to do a free weight is not feasable. A machine can be as simply as a cable and pulley or a pivoting lever, but gravity only goes one way. I agree nutrition and suppliments are also a huge step ahead of Arnolds time, but the machines are much more specific now as well, guys who say machines are unneccisary probably drive cars with carbeurators
