overheating spark plugs?

I was checking out the crank sensors today and poking around in the engine bay, and I noticed my spark plugs wires, they were really bad when we got the car I mean you could see the sparks at night because they were so worn, so when I replaced them last july I couldn't figure out how to get them back on the nice little set up they were in so I kind of left them hanging there, they were good for the longest time so I didn't think twice. Well when I was checking them out they are pretty much touching the exhaust manifold and there are rubbing marks from one that was laying on it. Could this have been my culprit? It kind of makes sense that letting the car cool down before it would start again but I mean it still could be the crank sensor and I haven't tested it yet, so we'll have to see. But does this sound like it could be a culprit? I mean they've been like that since July.
