Parts pf the internet are shut down from time to time. Thats how they got one of OBL's side kicks a couple of years ago. They shut it down in part of SE Asia.
China shuts its down regularly.
There have been examples of various groups crashing countries by overloading it.
There was an example here in Australia when an online betting site didnt wish to be the victim of extortion. The group up to no good flooded the betting site with hits. It crashed one of the connections in & out of Australia.
A well planned operation could crash it on a large scale.
