Why bdid Merc have so many different transmissions for so many different models I mean, couldn't 1 4sp fit a few cars?

A custom match list - I don't know about that. That's a difficult one. It has taken me ages to find out that a 722.3 transmission is in fact the same length as a 722.1 but that the rear mount is in a different position so you need a slightly different bracket. I think this bracket was actually made by MB so I'm now searching for a part number...
As for so many transmission models - well the most of the differences within a series seem to be related to shifting points for a particular engine. A 722.112 for example was "tuned" to shift for a 2.8 litre petrol engine, whilst a 722.118 was "tuned" for a diesel. The basic carcase and gearing inside is the same (albeit with very slight changes) and for the situation of the 722.112 an extra lever on the right hand side of the trans... but anyway I'm babbling.
So here is how I would go about finding the answer.
1) Find out the chassis number of the 500SEC and see which transmission was meant to be fitted. May be the information in the link that rs899 posted can help
2) Then try and find out the difference between the transmission you want to fit and the one that Mercedes fitted.
If a 722.3 was fitted to the 500SEC then I guess you'll find that it will physically fit.
