I haven't done this, but I've looked into it; to the best of my knowledge, the cable/plug assembly winds up as two wires to the motor, and these can be desoldered from the bad motorand resoldered to the new motor.
It is possible to remove the motor from the housing to expose these connections (the housing is held together with clips); but be VERY careful because the clips are old, probably rusty, and the plastic is very brittle. DO NOT LOSE THE CLIPS and observe how the wires are routed.
Hooking up the wires "backwards" won't destroy anything but the motor will run BACKWARDS and won't do it's job. It should be possible to identify the "ground" wire by looking at the wiring diagrams on the CD. It might be possible to identify the correct wiring by observing the colors.
