I removed it and, since the wood was ruined anyway by the hole, decided to "make lemonade." I enlarged the hole and mounted a recessed pushbutton switch, then ran the wires up into the glove box and connected them to my garage door opener remote control. To open/close the garage door, I press that button. The recess keeps the button from being accidentally pressed by stuff sitting on the console.
